The Slow Walking Kindness Reflection Activity for Kids, Part 2
category: Classroom Innovations
Please listen to Part 2 of "The Slow Walking Kindness Reflection Activity for Kids" where you will find more detailed information about this original, entertaining, creative, and challenging exercise for students in elementary through middle school. This is a follow-up podcast from Part 1 which introduced the activity. Part 3 will come next week and will present my response after trying the exercise.
For the activity, the kids walk slowly, take each step as an act of kindness, imagine and experience the feeling going through them, stop, at times to reflect on what's happening, and, after 15 minutes of "walking," they sit and listen to music and contemplate what they did during the overall activity. Lastly, they write about their outer and inner experiences and have a class discussion, where the teacher and/or students read aloud the responses. Their writings are further probed with questions from the teacher.
This is a physical and contemplative journey that should be performed in a gym or playground. Rules are set up prior to the activity to keep the "walking part" under control.
